NCIS: Los Angeles: The First Season (Blu-ray)

Judge David Johnson doesn't know what N.C.I.S. stands for...Naval Criminal something Studebaker?

CBS spins off one of its most popular dramas and stockpiles the new endeavor with a bunch of recognizable faces. The result: if you like this kind of show, you'll probably like this one.

Those faces: Chris O'Donnell (Batman and Robin), LL Cool J (Deep Blue Sea), and Linda Hunt (Kindergarten Cop). They make up an elite unit of undercover NCIS agents, who get the call when there are terrorists at large, rogue Navy SEALs stealing drug money, or private security soldiers running amok.

When the rubber meets the road and Jack Bauer isn't available to defuse the situation, these guys are called. Special Agents Callen (O'Donnell) and Hanna (LL) hit the field throwing punches and running in slow motion away from exploding pyrotechnics, while their support team fiddles around with traffic cameras and Windows Vista. Still, it's a strategy that works, with each of these 24 episodes ending in victory for the good guys and smirks all around.

Really, if you like this kind of show, then NCIS: Los Angeles should appeal to you. And by "this kind of show," I'm talking about slick procedurals with explosions, so-so writing, and lots of high-tech gadgets. Basically, your typical CBS hour-long.

I have never been terribly enamored with the CBS procedural—CSI, CSI: Miami, NCIS; they never grabbed me. NCIS: Los Angeles did, however, supply a decent dose of entertainment.

Most of that success can be laid at the feet of its two leads. Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J are pretty good here. They've got real chemistry together as Alpha male field agents and are even humorous enough to add comic relief to the production. When it's time to suit up for action—which apparently is a frequent occurrence in Los Angeles—these two exhibit solid physical presence. LL Cool J in particular carries the stunt-work well, often being the guy who gets to indulge in the hand-to-hand combat work.

When the screen isn't jumping with car chases and remote detonations, you're looking at a fairly standard-issue procedural. There's a mystery that needs to be solved and the NCIS team works the clues, messes around with computer, and sends their big dogs into the field to take care of business. With the action quotient jacked up, the pacing isn't as methodical; pointing to the creators' desire to beef up the genre, and give more weight to the mayhem. I can dig it.

The six-disc Blu-ray set provides a satisfying technical experience for the show. Episodes look fantastic in their slick 1.78:1, 1080p transfer. This isn't a dark show; seedy grit is exchanged for fun in the sun, and thick vibrant colors. The high-def presentation enhances the show's attractive look and makes for a high-end visual feast. No question: the Blu-ray is worth the upgrade. There's a lot of soundwork going on, from the manic effects to the brawny score, and the DTS-HD Master Audio handles it all very well. Extras: Featurettes on the cast and crew, the set design, the Ops center, the stunts and the making of LL Cool J's music video; an "Inspired Television" segment; select episode commentary from creator Shane Brennan; and LL Cool J's "No Crew is Superior" music video.

I'm still not entirely sure what Linda Hunt's character is for; she's petite, snarky, and…that's about it.

It won't redefine what can be done on the small screen, but NCIS: Los Angeles keeps the action moving. That's probably good enough.

Not Guilty. I'm gonna knock you out!

Did we give NCIS: Los Angeles: The First Season (Blu-ray) a fair trial? yes / no

What's "fair"? Whether positive or negative, our reviews should be unbiased, informative, and critique the material on its own merits.

Continuing a tradition of highly-acclaimed documentaries, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers' Damn The Torpedoes promises to be another welcome addition to the Classic Albums series. Retracing the steps taken to create this enduring American Rock 'N' Roll album, Tom Petty, Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, and Ron Blair, in addition to co-producer Jimmy Iovine and engineer Shelly Yakus, partake in brand new interviews. Supplemented with new and archival footage, in-depth multi-tape analysis, and 40 minutes of bonus footage, this DVD proves why 30 years later, Damn The Torpedoes stands the test of time. [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]

August 10 (pre-book order date July 16):

Nils Lofgren / Cry Tough / 2DVD
Another welcome addition to Eagle Rock's Rockpalast DVD series, Nils Lofgren's Cry Tough is an incredible live showcase of the guitar virtuoso, with performances from 1976, 1979, and 1991. This 2DVD set, following up concerts from Joan Armatrading, Meat Loaf, Thin Lizzy, and UB40 on the German TV program, captures Lofgren stepping into the spotlight as a soloist, after turns with Neil Young's Crazy Horse and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. [MSRP $19.98]

Roy Orbison / The Last Concert / CD
The instantly recognizable vocals, heart-on-sleeve songwriting, and unmistakable style of Roy Orbison is embedded in American's musical tapestry. The Last Concert, captured from his December 4, 1988 concert in Cleveland, OH, is a perfect homage to such a pristine and unforgettable artist. Performed just two days before his passing, this fourteen-song collection is the exact set list he played that evening, including seven top 10 singles such as "Oh, Pretty Woman" and the Grammy-Award Winning "Crying." Originally released as a limited run via iTunes in 2008, this historic performance, untouched by mixing or enhancements, is now available on CD for the first time. It truly captures one of the best rock 'n' roll singers of all time. [MSRP $13.98]

August 17 (pre-book order date July 23)

Jackson Browne / Going Home / DVD
American singer/songwriter Jackson Browne has carved out his place in America's musical history, not only with the seven platinum albums to his name, but his reputation for penning poignant songs for the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez, The Eagles, and many others. Going Home, originally released via Pioneer in 1999 as a home video, is a reflection of his stellar career. Seamlessly blended live performances meld with interviews and rare footage for a full take of Browne's legacy, as well as the timeless nature of his music. Live renditions of classics "Running on Empty," "Take It Easy," and "Doctor My Eyes," in addition to guest interviews/performances from Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby, The Eagles, David Lindley, Graham Nash, and Jennifer Warnes complete this DVD package. [MSRP $14.98]

August 24 (pre-book order date July 30)

Pixies / Acoustic & Electric Live / Blu-ray
One of the most influential alternative rock acts of all time, the Pixies spent the late eighties/early nineties laying a foundation that would be treaded by countless indie/rock acts to come. After a decade of silence, they made their triumphant return with a 2004 reunification. Acoustic & Electric Live shows them busting out in 2005 with two performances – one electric (Paradise Club in Boston), one acoustic (Newport Folk Festival – their first ever unplugged show). Packed to the brim with bonus features, this set includes a live Boston club set from 1986, Newport photo gallery, and an acoustic rehearsal of "Debaser" that did not make the final Newport set list. Originally released as separate DVDs in 2006, these two concerts will now be available in a single hi-def package. [MSRP $24.98]

Black Label Society / Doom Troopin' Live – The European Invasion / Blu-ray
For over twenty years, Zakk Wylde has been burning up stages, both as Ozzy Osbourne's right hand guitar man, and fronting his own band, Black Label Society. Doom Troopin' Live follows their 2005 trek around Europe, for a sold out tour supporting the Mafia album. This 16-song set in Paris is completed with extensive bonus features, including four tracks from their Astoria show in London, music videos, and "Backstage Pass" – a 50-minute documentary following BLS on the road. Originally released as a 2DVD set, this blazing blast of heavy metal is now presented in high-def as a single disc package. [MSRP $19.98]

Electric Light Orchesta / Live: The Early Years / DVD
Commemorating 40 years in the business, Electric Light Orchestra's Live: The Early Years DVD is the perfect package to showcase the band's signature sound – a blend of lush orchestration and rock 'n' roll grandness. Formed in 1970, with global album sales in excess of 50 million, ELO is one of rock's biggest bands. The three concerts highlighted in this program include tracks from a 1973 performance at Brunel University, their 1974 appearance on the German TV series Rockpalast, and the 1976 Fusion concert at the New Victoria Theatre in London, filmed during the "Face The Music" tour. [MSRP $14.98]

August 31 (pre-book order date August 6)

Jane's Addiction / Live Voodoo / DVD and Blu-ray
Live Voodoo, Jane's Addiction's first ever live DVD, captures a musical celebration at the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans in 2009. Filmed on Halloween night, the reunion of the original lineup – guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, drummer Stephen Perkins, and ever-enigmatic frontman Perry Farrell – proved they still have that flawless, ferocious flair that conquered the hard rock world of the late eighties/early nineties. Setting in motion a lasting alt-rock legacy, they are seen performing staples predominantly from their first two albums. The band worked their magic over the crowd, proving that a Jane's Addiction show is more than just a concert – it's an experience. [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]

Barclay James Harvest / Berlin – A Concert For The People / DVD
One of the most popular acts in Germany, Barclay James Harvest is a proprietor of melodic masterpieces. Their signature sound is a fusion of rock and classical music. Performing to over 250,000 fans in front of the German parliament building the Reichstag, the band performed A Concert For The People on August 30, 1980. They played this historic concert to Germany's divided capital city, which was still sliced in half by the Berlin Wall. Featuring classics that span their career, in addition to tunes from the then-to-be-released album Turn of the Tide, Barclay James Harvest held this concert to personally thank the fans for their massive support. [MSRP $14.98]

September 14 (pre-book order date August 20)

The Everly Brothers / Reunion Concert – Live at the Royal Albert Hall / DVD
The harmonies, acoustic guitars, and brilliant songwriting of the Everly Brothers led to chart dominance and fan adoration in the late fifties and early sixties. In September 1983, after a 10-year split, Phil and Don Everly reunited at London's famed Royal Albert Hall, establishing a renewal in their partnership that lasts to this day. This concert, backed with a bonus documentary, visits one of music's most popular duos performing a set that Phil Everly would refer to as one of his most memorable. [MSRP $11.98]

Rory Gallagher / Ghost Blues + Best of the Beat Club 2DVD / The Beat Club Sessions CD
Irish guitar virtuoso Rory Gallagher scaled musical heights with his majestic melding of urban blues and hard rock chops. On September 14, fans can enjoy the dual release of the Beat Club Sessions CD and Ghost Blues + Best of the Beat Club 2DVD set. The CD hosts previously unreleased recordings from three different appearances of the German television series Beat Club in the early seventies, mostly extracted from his first two albums. Ghost Blues treats viewers to a complete and fully authorized documentary on Rory, featuring archive interviews with the man himself, and contributions from many of his friends and admirers, such as Bob Geldof, The Edge, and former band members Ted McKenna and Gerry McAvoy. The second disc of this 2DVD set displays Rory's onstage magnificence, with 90 minutes worth of footage from the Beat Club. [MSRP $24.98 for 2DVD, $13.98 for CD]

September 21 (pre-book order date August 27)

Kenny G / Live at Montreux 1987/1988 / DVD
When Grammy-Award winning saxophonist Kenny G hit the famed Montreux Jazz Festival in 1987, he was riding high with success, burning up the charts with his hit single "Songbird," as well as enjoying the success of his multi-platinum Duotones album. Setting the Swiss crowd on fire that evening, he was asked to return in 1988, just before the release of his Silhouette album. Live at Montreux 1987/1988 captures both of these performances, acting as a live photograph of Kenny's breakout into global stardom. [MSRP $14.98]

We Wish You A Metal Xmas And A Headbanging New Year Deluxe Edition / CD
Originally released in 2008, We Wish You A Metal Xmas is everyone's favorite holiday tunes...amped to eleven! This revised version is updated with four new tracks from the 2009-released companion EP —"O Christmas Tree," featuring Doro Pesch, "Auld Lang Syne," performed by Girlschool, "Frosty The Snowman," featuring Steve "Lips" Kudlow (Anvil) and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," featuring Dez Fafara (DevilDriver) and Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake). The original 12 tracks kick out festive jams featuring Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Billy F Gibbons (ZZ Top), Alice Cooper, Lemmy Kilmister, George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), John 5 (Marilyn Manson), and the late great Ronnie James Dio on classics like "Run Rudolph Run," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "Silver Bells." Michael McDonald / This Christmas – Live In Chicago / DVD and Blu-ray
There's no mistaking Michael McDonald's signature voice, which lends itself beautifully to holiday tunes! This special Christmas-themed episode of the PBS series Soundstage opens with selections from the Doobie Brothers and his solo career before sliding seamlessly into a dozen Christmas tunes rendered in McDonald's classic croon. Many of these songs appeared on his 2009 This Christmas album. Wrapping the set with three more choice Doobie Brothers cuts, this concert, filmed in Chicago, is completed with a bonus cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]

Rush / 2112 & Moving Pictures Classic Albums / DVD and Blu-ray
Following a banner year of dynamic documentaries, from Black Sabbath and Tom Petty, the acclaimed, award-winning Classic Albums series ventures on to prog-rock powerhouse Rush, delving into the backgrounds of two of their legendary albums. 2112, which was certified triple platinum, landed the band on the charts, with a #1 position in their native Canada, and in the top 75 in the US. Moving Pictures, their biggest selling album to date, went #1 and quadruple platinum in Canada, hitting #3 in the US and the UK. Bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer Neil Peart, along with original producer Terry Brown, walk us through the creation of the two epic musical entities, via interviews, archival videos, and multi-track tape demonstrations. 50 minutes of additional footage that did not make the broadcast version are included as well. [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]

Ronnie Wood / I Feel Like Playing / CD
Ronnie Wood's legacy is undeniable, having played a pivotal role in The Rolling Stones, The Faces, The Jeff Beck Group, and The Birds, in addition to a thriving solo career. His first release since 2001's Not For Beginners, features guest appearances from Slash, Billy F Gibbons (ZZ Top), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Kris Kristofferson, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Bernard Fowler, Daryl Jones, and Jim Keltner. [MSRP $13.98]

INXS / Mystify / DVD
Formed in Australia in the late seventies, INXS earned a reputation as a phenomenal live act before hitting their stride as a recording act in the eighties. Maintaining a steady stream of classic hit singles and best selling albums, they filled global arenas with their infectious and sexy pop sound. Mystify features their 1997 concert at the Loreley Festival in Germany, filmed for the Rockpalast TV series just five months before the premature passing of frontman Michael Hutchence. Not only does this DVD include performances of all seven of their US Top-10 singles, but six bonus tracks from their 1984 Rockpalast appearance. [MSRP $14.98]

October 12 (pre-book order date September 17)

Dio / Holy Diver Live / Blu-ray
One of the greatest hard rock singers of all time, the late Ronnie James Dio brought a stylized, sophisticated nature to the heavy side of rock. He and his band, Dio, whipped the London crowd at the Astoria Theater into a frenzy when they took the stage and plowed through the classic Holy Diver album in its entirety. Holy Diver Live features not only this 2005 performance, which is also peppered with choice tunes from RJD's Black Sabbath and Rainbow days, but a bonus band interview. Originally released on DVD in 2006, this high-def version is a fitting tribute to a true icon. [MSRP $19.98]

Rolling Stones / Ladies & Gentlemen / DVD and Blu-ray
Just after the release of Stones in Exile, which took viewers through the making of the Rolling Stones' seminal album Exile on Main Street, Eagle Rock Entertainment is proudly presenting us with a taste of their live experience. Billed as "the most powerful rock film ever made," Ladies & Gentlemen was filmed over the course of four nights in Texas during the "Exile on Main Street" tour in 1972. This fully restored and remastered masterpiece, which premiered at the Ziegfield Theatre in New York in 1974 and played in select US theatres, is the first fully authorized DVD and Blu-ray release of the film. [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]

October 19 (pre-book order date September 24)

Twisted Sister / Live at Wacken / DVD/CD
Originally released in 2005, this remastered version of the Live at Wacken DVD/CD is a blend of Twisted Sister reflecting on their career and live footage from their 2003 appearance at the Wacken Festival. The juxtaposition of candid time with band via behind-the-scenes footage, and their explosive live show before the hungry heavy-metal loving German crowd is a one-of-a-kind treat any fan would enjoy. The CD companion mixes audio from the performance with vintage concert tracks from the 1980s. [MSRP TBA]

Directors Paul Verhoeven (Totall Recall, Basic Instinct) of ROBOCOP, Irvin Kershner of ROBOCOP 2 and Fred Dekker (Monster Squad Forever, Nighs of the Creeps) of ROBOCOP 3 bring the half robot, half police officer to life with the help of an intensely talented cast, including Peter Weller (The Order; 24), Robert Burke (Good Night, and Good Luck; Tombstone), Kurtwood Smith (Rambo III; That 70?s Show) and Nancy Allen (Law and Order, Carrie).

In ROBOCOP (1987), a terminally wounded cop in crime-ridden Detroit returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him. ROBOCOP 2 (1990) features a corrupt businesswoman seeking to disable Robocop in favor of her own model of cyborg. In ROBOCOP 3 (1993) Robocop saves the day once more. This time the half man/half robot takes on ruthless developers who want to evict some people on "their" land.

The Robocop Trilogy collector?s edition on Blu-ray will be available for the suggested retail price of $59.99 US/$69.99 Canada. Prebook is September 8.
